An Arrogant Bias

Denial and self deception can be a 1-2 punch that will keep us from understanding our heritage and therefore our potential heading into 2012 and beyond. We will go beyond, or at least we have the wherewithal should we decide to take that route. There must be a laying down of our prejudices, and arrogant bias about how uncivilized those who went before us were.

Herodotus is generally considered to be the starting point of Western historical writing. And because we think so highly of ourselves, things that he reported and wrote in the fifth century BCE that don’t fit our conventional thinking, we throw out, or at least we claim that he exaggerated.

I’m afraid it is we who boast too mush!

As an example Herodotus wrote of the great wall of Babylon “that was so wide it had buildings on top of the wall with enough space between the buildings to drive a four hore chariot”. Yeah sure we used to boast, that is until we unearthed portions of that wall that indeed fit Herodotus’ measurements.

But how was it possible to build the Spinx, Giza pyramids, and mummify more than three-quarters of a billion people (our best estimate). Who knows how many more await our discovery. Less than ten years ago we unearthed more than 10,000 mummies near the town of Bawiti, southwest of Cairo.

In spite of the fact that new discoveries are brought to light, nearly every year, about ancient civilizations like Atlantis, Lemuria, and other Cnetral and South American cultures, we still want to dismiss anything that doesn’t fit with our “accepted historical paradigm.” Who made what acceptable and based on what logical conclusions?

As we move forward with many seemingly wild stories about what 2012 may bring, may we not take the arrogant bias of the future that we have of the past because there’s more danger in doing that than where we have been.
