There are so many theories about what has happened to our earth over the millions of years. And then there are those who think the earth is only 6-7,00 years old. Comets, near fly by planets, super earthquakes, and pole shift theories abound; however, the crust displacement theory has interesting possibilities and a growing number of followers.
Most are not aware that the earth’s crust is only about thirty miles thick. Compare it to a drive from Houston International airport to the south side of the city. When you think about that, it’s a bit scary becaus it gets HOT DOWN THERE and I’m not talking about a physical hell.
This outer crust rests on a sort of lubricating layer like K-Y, but lest you start thinking in different terms, the technical name is the asthenosphere. Don’t confuse continental drift, nor various plate-tectonic theories with crust displacement. Let’s stick with one crisis here. Some try to visualize the orange peel with an abaility to come unstuck and slide around the orange.
Obviously such action would set off major earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, extinction of animals, people, and even some continents. Is this what happened dto Lemuria, Atlantis, and others?
Charles Hapgood and others have advocated just such an event. In 1958 Hapgood published his first book, The Earth’s Shifting Crust. Such a scenario would give explanation as to why the Antartica was once warmer, being further to the North than the current location. In fact, Hapgood’s theory put the current Antartica location 2,000 north of where it now resides. His theory would also explain why Northern Europe and North America were once under glacial conditions.
The four minor things to be resolved are: is this a valid theory, has it happened before, what caused such a catastrophe if it did indeed happen, and is there any way to be warned of another such event? Ah, let’s get back to the McCain-Obama debate- something tangible!
