A meme is a postulated unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. The British scientist Richard Dawkins introduced the word “meme” in his book, The Selfish Gene (1976) as a basis for discussion of evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. The fifteen year old web bot principle works off of memes as well.
I am a contributor the 2012 meme with this web site.
Examples of memes would include: web sites, melodies, catch-phrases, beliefs (notably religious beliefs), clothing fashion, and the technology of building arches (molds if you will). The etymology of the term relates to the Greek word for “something imitated”. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate and respond to selective pressures.
So, is the 2012 meme a self-fulfilling prophecy and if so what exactly is THAT?
Is it the destruction, the end of the world (at one end of the spectrum) or is it an enlightenment beyond anything the world has ever known (at the other end)? Maybe it is some place in between and then maybe it will amount to nothing; however, as a believer in the power of the meme, SOMETHING is on the way! Terence McKenna is one of the early fathers in the 2012 meme and he wrote, “We are not a sideshow, or an epiphenomenon, or an ancillary something-or-other on the edge of nowhere.”
McKenna probably needed to say that because he was noted for his knowledge, and the ability to articulate his knowledge, of the use of psychedelics, metaphysics, plant-based entheogens, and subjects ranging from shamanism, mysticism, hermeticism, neo-platonism, biology, geology, physics, astrophysics, media theory, linguistics, poetry, historical and civilizational timelines, the theoretical origins of human consciousness, psychedelic phenomenology, and his concept of novelty theory.
Talk about novelty!
The bottom line is regardless of the position one takes in relation to the 2012 meme (is it really October 28,2011 as Johan Calleman believes, instead of December 21, 2012) SOMETHING BIG is on the way. Memes just happen!
